The National Biotechnology Committee held its first meeting for the year under the chairmanship of HE Dr. Saif bin Abdullah Al Haddabi, Undersecretary for Research and Innovation at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MoHERI), on Wednesday 16th of March 2022, with the participation of the committee members.
The National Biotechnology Committee’s tasks were also reviewed according to the Ministerial Decision No. 91/2021, such as creating an overall national strategy, reviewing all current legislation, regulations and controls in the Sultanate regarding the regulation of the use of biotechnology and its products related to the protection of genetic data, proposing the necessary laws and regulations or required amendments to existing systems with the importance of their consistency and alignment with the current realities, and working on qualifying Omani national cadres in the field of biotechnology to form teams or specialized groups to study topics related to biotechnology in coordination with the competent authorities.
During the meeting, the committee discussed regulating the ethical uses and management of biotechnology, as there is a need to identify the local challenges due to the importance of this task as this technology is one of the most important modern sciences that has brought about great achievements in the medical and agricultural fields as well as in other industries
It is worth noting that the National Biotechnology Committee included members representing a number of government agencies, such as the Ministry of Health, Sultan Qaboos University, Royal Oman Police, Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion.
