The Sultanate, represented by The Research Council (TRC) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, has been honoured to host the second meeting of the General Assembly of the International Council for Science (ICS) in 2021. The ICS is one of the active international organizations in the field of natural and social sciences research. It has been formed through the recent integration of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC).
ICS is a non-profit organization with over 150 member scientific research councils and unions representing more than 140 countries from around the world.
The varied research and community initiatives offered by the ICS include counselling and research support, in addition to provision of research grants, holding international scientific conferences, and participation in supporting evidence-based policies.
ICS’s General Assembly in its meeting, held in Paris on July 3-5, reviewed its strategic plans and priorities, which including education, public health, artificial intelligence, big data, etc. It also selected a president and a new board.
The bidding file to host the event in 2021 was presented by Aisha Harib Al Bahriya, Acting Director of the Culture, Basic and Social Sciences Research Sector at TRC. Hosting this event is an opportunity for the Sultanate to strengthen linkages with the research councils and federations from around the world, and benefit from the other members’ experiences with regard to the development of scientific research, utilization of science to research and find solutions for many of the existing challenges.
